Mercedes Unveils eActros 600 Long-Haul Electric Truck Series

Mercedes-Benz has officially introduced the eActros 600, a long-haul electric truck that has been in development since 2020. The truck was previously showcased as a prototype at the IAA Transportation expo last year and has now undergone range testing in Germany.

The eActros 600 is equipped with three 207-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs, allowing for a projected range of over 500 km (310 miles) on a single charge. Mercedes-Benz Trucks recently demonstrated the truck’s real-world range by traveling from Stuttgart to Bolzano, covering a distance of 530 km on one charge.

With a combination weight of 44 tons, including a standard semitrailer weighing approximately 22 tons in the EU, the electric truck proved its capabilities in the Stuttgart to Bolzano journey, weighing a total of 40 tons. After recharging, the truck returned to Stuttgart, completing a total distance of over 1,000 km with one intermediate top-up, thanks to its efficient drive, high battery capacity, and high-performance recuperation.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks highlights that around 60 percent of long-distance journeys made by its customers in Europe are shorter than 500 kilometers, indicating that the existing charging infrastructure at depots and loading and unloading points is sufficient.

The series eActros 600 currently supports CCS charging at up to 400 kW. However, customers have the option to retrofit megawatt charging when the technology becomes available. This will allow for 80% battery charging in around 30 minutes. Fleet operators will be able to track the vehicle’s location using an online portal and monitor the battery charge level remotely.

The eActros 600 is equipped with a newly-developed 800-volt electric axle featuring two motors, providing a peak output of 600 kW. It also comes with a 4-speed transmission. The truck features five levels of motor braking, allowing energy to be regenerated back into the batteries. It also offers one-pedal driving. Additionally, the onboard system automatically adjusts driving parameters based on the topography, road course, and traffic signs.

The truck includes an electric-mechanical power take-off for operating hydraulic or mechanical equipment, such as tipping, sliding floor, or silo trailers. It also offers a DC or AC power take-off for refrigerated cargo applications.

Overall, the Mercedes eActros 600 represents a significant step forward in the electric truck market, providing long-haul capabilities with a range that meets the requirements of most European customers. With rapid charging options and advanced features, the eActros 600 showcases the potential of electric trucks in the commercial transportation industry.
